Can a Student with a DAEP Referral Enroll?

We do not restrict enrollment based on discipline history. While we do not create IEPs or 504s, many students with past accommodations succeed in our flexible, self-paced online program.

We Do Not Restrict Enrollment Based on Disciplinary Referrals

Yes, students with a DAEP (Disciplinary Alternative Education Program) referral—or other disciplinary history—are welcome to enroll at Excel High School or Northgate Academy. We believe in offering second chances and flexible learning options for all students, regardless of their background or previous challenges in traditional school environments.

About Our Learning Model

Both Northgate Academy and Excel High School are a self-paced, fully online high schools designed to support students with diverse needs, including those who may not have thrived in a classroom setting.

That said, we do want families to know that:

  • We do not have a traditional special education department.

  • We are not equipped to develop or manage individualized IEPs or 504 plans.

However, many students who previously had accommodations in their traditional schools have found success with us—often because of how our program is naturally structured.

Built-In Flexibility That Supports a Variety of Learners

Even though we don’t create custom IEPs or 504s, our courses include features that help many students stay on track:

  • Self-paced learning – Work at a speed that suits the student’s needs and schedule.

  • Assignment resubmissions – Most written assignments and projects can be revised and resubmitted to improve grades.

  • Multiple quiz and test attempts – Students are allowed to retake assessments to reinforce understanding.

  • Open-book/open-note exams – Designed to assess learning in a less stressful way.

These elements often mimic the types of supports students receive through IEPs or 504 plans—just built into the platform by default.
